Mary Rood is an experienced partner in identifying and leveraging readiness for sustainable growth. Working with individuals, teams, and business leaders to explore their narrative she enables the co-creation of unique solutions to complex challenges that respect and reinforce agency, align to a shared purpose, support commitment and enable better outcomes.   She has over 25 years’ experience in corporate business and technology leadership. 

Currently she resides in the Hudson Valley area of NY with her family and their many pets and enjoys long walks on the many rail trails and playing her violin. 


Brian Monthie is a futurist, technologist, and leadership coach who empowers entrepreneurs, executives, and teams to unlock their greatest potential and solve their chronic business challenges. As co-founder of Unrestricted Humans, he serves those ready, willing, and available to do the work to grow themselves and their business. He holds a BA in Theatre from Binghamton University and an MBA in Technological Entrepreneurship from the Lally School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 

Currently he lives in Albany with his wife and growing family.  He enjoys playing soccer in an over-40 adult league, hiking the high peaks of New York, lectoring at his church, and preparing for his most meaningful role yet—becoming a parent.


Layne Raines is passionate about cutting through noise and helping business owners and their teams focus on what actually matters—people and clarity. As a consultant and founding partner of Unrestricted Humans™, she uses her deep experience across industries like oil and gas, finance, technology, hospitality, and startups, to bring a practical approach to coaching, facilitation, and change. Layne’s clients trust her to help surface blind spots and spark real growth—always with humor, curiosity, and compassion. Whether she’s mapping out smarter workflows or poking at the invisible walls inside businesses, Layne makes work more human and results more real.

Layne splits her time between Texas and Montana where she enjoys being outside with her husband, daughter, and two dogs. She is also a podcast junky, avid reader, and wannabe gardener.

Why are you called Unrestricted Humans?

Each of us, at our core, felt a pull that said, “Why is everyone focused on sticking people in a box?!” A conversation later… Unrestricted Humans.

We believe every single human has the ability to step outside their current comfort zone and expand on their knowledge and skills. We’re not looking to train you on a process or a set of tools. Instead we focus on your context.

What’s this “context” thing?

When we refer to context, we mean all of the things around you - the environment, conditions, and factors that influence how you cross finish lines, how you interact with people, and what you’re able to get done.

What kinds of clients do you work with?

We work with small businesses who share our values and who are ready for transformational change in their personal and professional lives - and for their teams! We’ve been in all sorts of industries across the globe, but know local is where we want to help thrive.

Who owns Unrestricted Humans?

We started as an unintentional team and turned into more than that. Our company is owned by Mary, Brian, and Layne.

Unrestricted doesn’t mean a haphazard organization, though. We bring the best practices we’ve learned in our careers to our company.

Where are you located?

We are a 100% virtual company, with some of us doing the virtual thing, even before the pandemic.

That doesn’t mean we don’t go on site. We just know that there is a way to team, explore, and grow without a commute.
