About Unrestricted Humans

We started as
a team we never
wanted to leave.

We built Unrestricted Humans because we'd experienced what great teams actually feel like, and watched too many businesses settle for something far less. We wanted to change that ratio.

Our story

Where it started, and why it matters.

There's a question on the Gallup Q12 - the most widely used employee engagement survey in the world - that stops most people cold: "I have a best friend at work."

It sounds almost absurd. A best friend. At work. Most people reading it think: that's not really possible, is it?

We know it's possible. Because we built it. And then we decided to help other people build it too.

Mary and Layne found each other the way great teams usually do; not by design, but by shared values recognized across a room. They started working together in 2021 and quickly realized they were experiencing something most people only catch glimpses of: a working partnership where honest disagreement made the work better, where different strengths didn't create friction but created range, and where the results were reliably better together than apart.

They also noticed something else. The businesses they were working with - small businesses, founder-led companies, teams of real people trying to build real things - were often running on grit alone. Smart owners stuck being the bottleneck of their own companies. Teams full of capable people who'd learned to wait for permission. Leaders who cared but didn't have the language or the tools to translate that care into actual performance.

The problem wasn't a lack of effort. It was a lack of the right kind of help. Most consultants arrived with a pre-built answer and left with a check. What these businesses actually needed was a thought partner willing to get into the work with them - someone who would stay until the problem was actually solved, not just diagnosed.

Unrestricted Humans was their answer to that gap. A company built on the belief that every business, no matter its size or industry, has the internal capacity to unlock genuine, lasting performance. It just sometimes needs someone on the outside with the framework, the experience, and the honesty to help it find the key.

How we think

Six things we believe about business, and why they shape everything we do.

1

Your team has more answers than you think

The people closest to the work almost always know what's wrong. The job isn't to bring in answers from outside, it's to build the environment where those answers surface.

2

Context beats cookie-cutters, every time

The playbook that worked for someone else's business isn't your playbook. We don't arrive with a pre-built solution. We build one with you, from what's actually happening.

3

The symptom is rarely the problem

Revenue instability, team turnover, low engagement... these are symptoms. The real constraint is almost always deeper, less obvious, and more fixable than it looks on the surface.

4

Fixing it together is the only fix that sticks

If we solve your problem without transferring the capability to you, we've just created a dependency. The goal is always a business that can navigate the next hard thing without us.

5

Being human at work isn't soft - it's strategic

Psychological safety, honest feedback, and genuine trust between teammates aren't nice-to-haves. They are measurable performance multipliers. We treat them that way.

6

Small businesses deserve serious help

Enterprise companies have entire departments dedicated to organizational performance. Small businesses have Google and their gut. We exist to close that gap.

The team

Two humans who mean it.

Mary Rood

Co-founder & Partner

Mary is the kind of partner who finds the door nobody else knew was there. With over 25 years in corporate business and technology leadership, she has spent her career figuring out why some teams thrive and others stall, and building the conditions that make the difference.

Her approach centers on readiness for sustainable growth, which means she doesn't push organizations to change faster than they can hold. Instead she works with the leaders and teams inside a business to co-create solutions that actually fit their context, reinforce their agency, and align to a purpose everyone actually believes in.

Mary's superpower is listening past what people say to what they mean - and then helping them say what they mean with confidence. She's worked across industries, organizational sizes, and leadership styles, and brings that range to every client engagement.

Layne Raines

Co-founder & Partner

Layne's gift is cutting through noise. In a world where most business conversations go in circles, she has a knack for finding the two or three things that actually matter, and then making sure everyone in the room agrees on what they are.

As a consultant and founding partner, she brings deep cross-industry experience spanning oil and gas, finance, technology, hospitality, manufacturing, professional services, education, and startups to every engagement. That range isn't accidental - she deliberately sought out industries with different rhythms and cultures because she wanted to understand what's universal about how humans perform at work, and what's particular to each context.

Clients trust Layne to surface the blind spots - the things everyone knows but no one says, the patterns that have calcified into "that's just how we do it here," the invisible walls inside businesses that no one built on purpose but everyone's running into. She names them plainly, without judgment, and then works alongside her clients to dismantle them.

Working together

What happens when two people with different strengths actually trust each other.

Mary and Layne have been partners since 2021, which in business terms means they've been through the awkward, the hard, and the clarifying. They've disagreed, worked it out, and come out the other side with a partnership that's stronger for the friction.

That experience is not incidental to the work. It's the whole point. They don't just teach teams how to function well - they model it. When you work with Unrestricted Humans, you're working with a team that has actually built what they're helping you build.

Their strengths are genuinely complementary. Mary brings the strategic architecture and the patient ear that finds what's really going on. Layne brings the directness and the cross-industry breadth that helps name it plainly and move quickly. Together, they cover more ground and see more angles than either could alone - and clients feel that difference immediately.

Common questions

Things people ask before they reach out.

Why "Unrestricted Humans"?

Because most business systems are designed to put people in boxes. A job description. A level. A function. A lane. And yet the best performance almost always comes from people who are working slightly outside their box - who are trusted with more, expected to think, and given the room to actually do it. We named the company after the thing we're trying to create: workplaces where humans aren't restricted to the smallest version of themselves.

What do you mean by "context"?

When we talk about context, we mean everything around you - the environment, the history, the relationships, the unwritten rules, the incentive structures, the way decisions actually get made versus how they're supposed to get made. Most consultants ignore context and hand you a framework. We start with your context and build from there. That's why our results stick.

Who do you typically work with?

Two kinds of businesses. Solo owners and founders (usually 1-4 people) who are good at what they do but need a strategic co-pilot - someone to think with, prioritize ruthlessly, and help build something that doesn't require them in every room. And small businesses with teams (5-200 people) where growth has introduced people complexity - managers who aren't leading, cultures that don't scale, performance that's uneven despite everyone trying hard.

Are you coaches, consultants, or something else?

Honestly? Yes, and we resist the labels. Coaches tend to ask questions and let you find your own answers. Consultants tend to bring answers and tell you what to do. We partner - which means we come in with real experience and opinions, we share them directly, and then we work through the actual problem alongside you until it's solved. You leave with capabilities, not just conclusions.

Where are you based?

We're a 100% virtual company with team members across the U.S. We've been working this way since before remote work was a conversation, and we're good at it. We go on-site when the work calls for it. We're registered with the Texas Comptroller.

Who owns Unrestricted Humans?

The company is owned by Mary and Layne. We started as an unintentional team and turned into something more than that - which is exactly the kind of story we help our clients write for their own businesses.
